Something to rule - that is what the governing classes need. As for that "something", the more complex, the harder to see through and control, the better for the pols. That is why the EU and the North American Union are such enticing propositions to power-hungry politicians. In the absence of a clear grasp of liberty and the institutions needed to preserve freedom, people are easy prey to the religious evocation of "democracy" for the enforcement of totalitarian measures. The floodgates of tyrannical government are wide open, the Western nation states have been a playing ground for arbitrary runaway government for decades, where the elected incumbents of power need not fear transgression of their formal rights and restrictions - because they are merely formal. And they are merely formal (witness the daily violation of laws by a constant process of retroactive or otherwise arbitrary legal change) because the populations of the "advanced Western countries" are politically more stultified and primitive than the subjects, of many a Kingdom and other aristocratic social structures hundreds of years ago. We have embraced and allowed to grow cancerously a vicious circle, whereby a childish and inherently paternalist notion of (representative) democracy accords the elected government a position analogous to that of an absolute ruler. This licence to abuse is leveraged by making the state and its organs ever more extensive and effectively uncontrollable, while its powers over the people grow by leaps and bounds, inevitably.The simplistic presumption of "the people" being the ones deciding on and thereby legitimizing government - by popular consent (majority vote) - misleads and, at the same time, intellectually and morally disarms people for it makes them feel they have endorsed government and, therefore, must suffer its actions, which in actual fact consist in the aggregate in removing governmental doings further and further from effective control by the people. That is why politicians are not reluctant to come up over and over again with the trite slogan demanding "More democracy".
Europeans do not understand what is going on. For hundreds of years they have been conditioned to accept the role of children at the command of their political masters. They tremble at the prospect of true liberty, which they despise as abominable anarchy. They do not trust themselves to such a grotesque extent that they feel taken well care of by government, even though they do not trust government, which is not a contradiction if one subscribes, as they do, to the theory of "the more benign crook".
Steeped in a long tradition of political ignorance, Europeans do not understand: unless government is rigorously required to operate "under the law" and strictly held accountable to acting as the guarantor of personal liberty, it is bound to become overbearing and downright tyrannical. Being unaware of this and indifferent to the habitual destruction of liberty by the government, it is not at all surprising that Europeans remain unperturbed by the massive transfer of once nationally based political power to remote ruling elites in Brussels.
The only hope is America, where millions of people remain influenced by that tradition of genuine liberty which made America the incredible success story it used to be. Let us hope that the unfortunate Europeanisation of America, i.e. its adoption of paternalism, can be stopped, and with it unspeakable political excesses (considered utterly unobjectionable in Europe) such as the one reported below:

Not only did Fox admit that he and George W. "At last we have public confirmation of the pernicious secret activity that’s been going on towards merging Mexico, Canada and the United States" declares Corsi, whose book became a bestseller shortly after publication. "Personally, I’d like to thank Vincente Fox. His candor about this merger is what’s going to stop it dead in its tracks" Corsi continues, "Fox’s appearance with Larry King and, of all places, on The Daily Show constitutes the first time a leader of Mexico, Canada or the U.S. has openly confirmed a plan to create a regional currency called the Amero -- a plan I document in detail in ’The Late Great U.S.A.’" Fox went on to explain how current regional trade agreements between the United States and its hopelessly corrupt neighbor to the south are intended to evolve into other previously hidden aspects of North American integration. As reported in WorldNetDaily, Larry King, near the end of the broadcast, asked Fox a question e-mailed from a listener: "I would like to know how you feel about the possibility of having a Latin America united with one currency" Fox answered in the affirmative, admitting he and George W. Bush had "agreed" to pursue the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas – a free-trade zone extending throughout the Western Hemisphere – and that part of the plan was to institute a regional currency from Canada to the tip of South America! "Long term, very long term" he said. "What we proposed together, President Bush and myself, it’s ALCA, which is a trade union for all the Americas" According to Corsi, Fox has indeed performed a public service. "George W. Bush is president of the United States, not king. He has utterly no right to enter into any such agreement with a foreign country, particularly a hostile one" During Fox’s tenure as Mexican president, millions of Mexicans entered the United States illegally. In Corsi’s view, this constitutes an invasion that has cost American taxpayers billions of dollars while destroying schools and bankrupting hospitals and municipal governments across the country…and is only a taste of what a merger would bring. "Finally" says the author of "The Late Great U.S.A" "here is unequivocal proof, straight from the mouth of Mexico’s former president, that Bush’s goal is to erode United States sovereignty in order to create free movement for Mexico’s peasant class across our border, in the process flooding us with even more anchor babies and illiterates ready and willing to take advantage of our country’s all-too-generous welfare programs" Mexico’s invasion of America can and must be stopped, but in order to do so, every citizen must rise up and demand an end to it.
