Secrecy - The President and the Press, Not Giving A Damn about 9/11 Truth

The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it.

President John F. Kennedy
Waldorf-Astoria Hotel
New York City, April 27, 1961
To get the context right, in which Kennedy made this pronouncement, note that he prefaced his speech by these word:
I have selected as the title of my remarks tonight "The President and the Press."
Today, the individual must disclose whatever the government demands him to reveal, while the government avails itself of one of the many monopoly powers it should not possess: the ability to determine the occasion and the extension of the concealment it seeks.

We still do not know the secrets surrounding the assassination of the man who spoke these words, and it is equally true that the government's "ability to determine the occasion and the extension of the concealment it seeks" has been a major tributary in the darkness.

For that reason, we know far too little of the events that shape our fate, so much so that we unlearn the ability to take the prospect of truth as our guide rather than government direction or other forms of uncritical spin.

A critical attitude and perseverance in its pursuit is too easily dismissed nowadays as a sign of doubtful cognitive disposition: those taking a level-headed approach to global warming are likened to holocaust deniers, those calling for thorough investigation of the circumstances leading to the 9/11 catastrophe are labelled summarily as conspiracy theorist, and so on.

It will take further posts to examine the 9/11 issue, but the bottom-line is clear: the egregious neglect of leads, facts and open questions that should be urgently addressed while they are irresponsibly ignored in the rush to build expedient myths.

It is outrageous that those who do the investigative job that should have been done by the government are smeared as freakish conspiracy theorists, while the scandal that can be substantiated - at the moment - does not pertain to an involvement of the government in the attacks, but to its gross negligence in clarifying the circumstances of these attacks.

In the manner of a controlled demolition, three buildings have collapsed into their own footprint - at free fall speed, which is impossible to effect by airliners crashing into them, the third building, having not even been hit by a plane. Hundreds of most astounding circumstances such as these have not been considered worthy of investigation, while convenient lies continue to be disseminated - such as the demonstrably erroneous claim that Saddam Hussein had a hand in 9/11.

The painful fact of the matter is: America is long on intense sentiments about 9/11, and damnably short on serious efforts to get closer to the truth.

We are being conditioned to have intense feelings about something we refuse to understand.

As with so many of the issues in which the Westerner invests his most pious emotions, one discovers hypocrisy where one would expect to find substance.
